Heartik Volunteers at the Summer Carnival for Families with Special Needs

On a warm summer day, eight Heartik volunteers came together to support the annual Summer Carnival for Families with Special Needs, a community event dedicated to raising autism awareness and creating a welcoming, inclusive space for children and families.

As an organization committed to raising awareness and supporting children with special needs, we were honored to participate not only as volunteers, but also as members of a community that believes every child deserves opportunities to connect, create, and simply enjoy being themselves.

Throughout the event, the carnival was filled with music, dancing, entertainment, hands-on crafts, and activities for children and families. Our volunteers helped with both the preparation and the activities throughout the day, working together to make sure everything was ready and that families could enjoy the event safely and comfortably.

Bringing Warmth Through Hands-On Activities

One of our favorite parts of the day was helping children and families with a variety of creative activities. From making colorful friendship bracelets to knitting and crafting scarves and hats, these activities gave participants an opportunity to create something with their own hands while spending time together.

We also helped with fun sensory and stress-relieving crafts, giving children a chance to explore, play, and express their creativity in their own way. What may seem like a simple craft activity can become a meaningful moment of connection—between children, parents, siblings, and volunteers.

Creating a Safe and Welcoming Space

Our volunteers also helped with the setup and safety of the activity areas. Some of our male volunteers took on the task of helping build and maintain the balloon castle area, making sure that children could enjoy the space in a safe and organized environment.

For us, volunteering is not simply about completing a list of tasks. It is about paying attention to what families need, stepping in where help is needed, and creating an environment where everyone feels welcome.

More Than an Event

The Summer Carnival was more than a day of entertainment. It was a celebration of inclusion, community, and understanding.

Seeing children laughing, creating, dancing, and participating alongside their families reminded us why Heartik is committed to this work. Awareness begins with understanding, but meaningful inclusion comes from creating opportunities for people to participate together.

We are grateful to the organizers for creating such a joyful and welcoming event, and especially grateful to every Heartik volunteer who gave their time, energy, and care. Whether they were setting up before the event, leading a craft activity, helping children, or simply making sure things ran smoothly, every contribution mattered.

As the president of Heartik, I am proud to see our volunteers turn our organization’s mission into action. We hope to continue working alongside families, community organizations, and other advocates to create more spaces where children with special needs are not simply included, but truly welcomed and celebrated.

Thank you to all of our volunteers and community partners for making this summer carnival a day filled with joy, friendship, and inclusion.
