In this activity, I served as one of the volunteers assisting ten special needs children in watching the movie "SpongeBob SquarePants" at the cinema. The primary goal was to support the children in gradually learning to complete the viewing process independently—including transportation, dining, ticket purchase, buying snacks, and finding their seats—without direct parental accompaniment.
During the snack purchase part at the theater, I observed that some children still lacked experience in making independent choices and managing reasonable spending. Situations of misunderstanding in communication exist. These moments highlighted the need for more guidance and prior preparation Additionally, I noticed that most children were unfamiliar with how to find their seats based on their ticket information, often relying on following others.
Despite these challenges, the activity proceeded smoothly overall. The children were largely immersed in the joyful atmosphere of the film, and the parents had a brief opportunity to rest and socialize outside the theater.
The event has positive significance in building the children's confidence and fostering independence, while also serving as a valuable practice in "letting go" for the parents.
Heartik is grateful for the opportunity to meet with primary resources, which is significant for our volunteers to reflect and later improve on our practices within the organization. We are thankful for the parents’s trust, allowing our organization to participate in this meaningful event. We look forward to continuing to support the children.
