On May 16, the Heartik Herricks Branch successfully hosted a warm and creative Clay Workshop at Shelter Rock Public Library. The workshop specially invited sculptor Shuiyang Liu to provide a free hands-on class for children and families, guiding participants in creating their own unique clay artworks. HEARTIK also prepared sculpting clay for every participant.
Clay art activities are especially beneficial for children with special needs. Through touching, shaping, and molding clay, children can improve hand coordination and sensory integration skills, strengthen concentration, and release emotions in a positive and relaxing environment.
Some children were hesitant to touch the clay at first, but with the teacher’s encourage, gradually overcame sensory concerns and created wonderful artworks of their own. Families naturally formed small groups, parents and children, as well as friends working together and enjoying the creative process. Many imaginative and unique artworks were brought to life during the event. A total of 16 families participated. With the support of caring volunteers and parents, the workshop was a great success. More clay workshops will be organized in the future to benefit more children and families in need.
