On May 25, the HEARTIK Great Neck North Branch proudly hosted a special College Applications Information Meeting during Memorial Day weekend. Around 45 students and parents attended the event to learn more about the college admissions process and opportunities available for students preparing for higher education. The meeting created an encouraging and informative environment where families were able to gain valuable insight into college planning, applications, and future academic goals. During the meeting, two guest speakers shared their personal experiences and advice with attendees.
One speaker, Connie, a graduate of New York University, discussed the importance of building a strong personal story throughout high school and how students can stand out in the admissions process through meaningful experiences and individuality.
The second speaker, Professor Shi Lv of Pace University, shared insights on college readiness, leadership, and taking initiative during the application journey. Professor Lv has an extensive academic background, including studies at Peking University and Syracuse University, as well as experience in research and higher education mentorship. He emphasized the importance of helping students develop experiences that align with their strengths, interests, and long-term goals. The speakers emphasized that colleges often look for unique qualities and experiences that help students distinguish themselves from other applicants.
They also highlighted several universities that provide strong support systems and opportunities for students with autism, including University of Connecticut, Landmark College, and Rochester Institute of Technology. These schools were recognized for their inclusive programs, academic support, and commitment to helping students succeed both socially and academically. In addition, the discussion explored college outcomes and opportunities in higher education. One example compared the medical school success rate of University of South Carolina with that of Stanford University School of Medicine, demonstrating that student success can be achieved through many different pathways and is not limited to only the most widely recognized institutions.
Another major focus of the meeting was the importance of summer during high school. The speakers encouraged students to use their summers as a time for exploration, self-discovery, and personal growth. They explained that summer provides valuable opportunities for students to reflect on their interests, develop experiences worth writing about in applications, and better understand who they are as individuals. Whether through volunteering, internships, academic programs, hobbies, or community involvement, students were encouraged to pursue activities that are meaningful to them and help shape their future goals.
We are grateful to our speakers, volunteers, students, and families who attended and helped make this event both educational and inspiring. We look forward to continuing to host programs that support students and families while helping young people prepare for successful futures.
